difference between a partial solar eclipse and a total solar eclipse is
like the difference between day and night. A partial solar eclipse will
never get completely dark, even at 97.7 percent it will only get dim
and hazy and you won't be able to see the sun's aurora. If you have the
chance it is better to travel to an area in the path of totality.
Total darkness at the center of the path of totality will last longer than towards the edges. For the 2024 total solar eclipse totality will last over four minutes in the center of the path, whereas along the edge of the path of totality darkness might only last a couple seconds.
In conclusion, it is best to find a location along the center of totality to view the total solar eclipse.
Will traffic be heavy with long lines and traffic jams? Well it can be hard to predict, but from previous experiences, usually problems and predictions tend to be over-hyped. For the 2017 total solar eclipse most of the traffic problems were from special events and concerts in the days leading up to the big event. The major traffic congestion problems were after the total solar eclipse had ended and everybody left at the same time.
When traveling by car to see the total solar eclipse you don't want to wait until the last minute, just in case everybody else has the same idea. We would recommend getting there the day before to avoid any problems.
There is a good chance that hotels and accommodations in the path of totality will be booked in advance. Some motels and hotels had booked rooms years in advance, but just outside the path of totality were plenty of rooms available that were just a short drive away.
Camping was a popular choice for many people. For the 2017 total solar eclipse on the west coast passed over national forest land public lands making camping more practical as compared to the big cities on the east coast. Weather will be a factor when deciding to camp outside. The 2024 total solar eclipse will be in April and the weather can be unpredictable more than a couple days in advance.
